In the footsteps of the Etruscans

With this itinerary we take you to rediscover the most ancient roots of the Tuscan people, because Etruscan blood flows in every Tuscan!

And it is right in the territory of Carmignano that the oldest evidence of the Etruscan period in Tuscany is preserved to this day.
Montalbano, with its fertile areas and good geographical position, constituted a focal point for the communication routes which, from the plain between Florence and Pistoia, reached the ports of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The findings of the 1960s demonstrate the extraordinary cultural and economic development of the Etruscan centre of Artimino.

To collect the finds that the entire area has returned, the Francesco Nicosia Etruscan Archaeological Museum was created, an ideal starting point for visiting the Archaeological Park of Carmignano, immersed in one of the most beautiful naturalistic and landscape environments in the region.

The visit to the Park allows you to appreciate the places that have returned the finds exhibited in the Museum, including the Tumulus of Montefortini and that of  Boschetti in Comeana, the five tombs of the Necropolis of Prato Rosello in Artimino and the fortified settlement of Pietramarina, which can be reached by following the road from Carmignano to Vinci.

If in Carmignano you can visit places linked to the world of the dead, in Prato instead testimonies linked to the world of the living have emerged.

In fact, in recent times, after the construction of the Central Tuscany Interport, a vast area of Etruscan origin came to light on the eastern outskirts of the city, the city of Gonfienti, located in a strategic point for the commercial connections of the period and strongly projected towards the trans-Apennine route. The city in fact found its natural urban and architectural comparison with Marzabotto, beyond the Apennines, on the road that connected Northern Etruria with Bologna and the North.

Information note: it is recommended to use the car for travel and to wear comfortable shoes for visiting the necropolises. The Gonfienti area can only be visited on the occasion of events and scheduled visits.
