MUMAT - Museum of Textile Machines A journey through time between textile machinery and manufacturing history

Visiting the Mumat Museum you can breathe the history of the industrial past of Bisenzio Valley!

The museum, opened to the public in 2008, houses textile tools and machinery from different periods (from the end of the 19th century to the mid-20th century), used to regenerate wool, including a manual wooden heddle loom, a carding machine, a spinning wheel, the still visible turbine, etc.

The building, now a multipurpose centre, stands on the remains of an ancient mill (a commonplace for the factories in the valley that needed water) which was later transformed into a factory. That factory that Amerigo Meucci had founded in 1893 survived almost a century, becoming, from a small carbonizing mill for the regeneration of rags, a modern enterprise with various spinning mills and dozens of workers.

During the visit we retrace the stages of production of regenerated wool, from rag to yarn: the fascinating process of producing carded fabrics from recycled materials, which has made the Prato textile district famous throughout the world. Furthermore, the Mumat offers educational activities, guided tours and temporary exhibitions,

The Mumat is part of the Prato Museum Network and is actively involved in the TIPO - Turismo Industriale Prato project, which sees the Textile Museum as the leader.
