Former Meucci Factory History, art and innovation: the industrial legacy that lives in MUMAT

The Meucci factory, a tresure of the textile industry, stands imposing along the banks of the Bisenzio river, at the point where it intertwines with the Fiumenta stream. Like many other ancient factories in Prato, it stands on the foundations of an ancient mill, witness to a centuries-old tradition.
But don't let its name fool you: although it is no longer active, the structure has been restored and now houses MUMAT, the Museum of Textile Machinery. Here, the secrets of the past are revealed through ancient machines, the beating heart of unparalleled textile production.

Originally, the mill and the textile factory shared spaces and destinies. Inside this imposing building, one of the first carbonizing processes in the area was started, alongside shredding. The Meuccis, among millers and textile entrepreneurs, stood out for their audacity and resourcefulness. In 1922, the building was expanded to place the spinning department, marking a fundamental turning point in the history of the textile industry. In 1928, the textile activity definitively prevailed, leading to the abandonment of the milling plant that had animated the factory for decades.
Despite the trials and damage suffered during the fury of the Second World War, the Meucci factory maintained its vitality until 1988, when it finally shut down. However, its spirit persists and lives on through the MUMAT, a place where textile machines tell stories of ingenuity and passion, of hard work and of a time long gone.

Today, thanks to the purchase and careful restoration of the Municipal Administration of Vernio, the Meucci factory has been transformed into the evocative Museum of Textile Machinery, a sanctuary of art and industrial history. Here, immersing yourself in the charm of a glorious past, you will be able to discover the delicate balance between tradition and innovation, between the craftsmanship of the past and modern technology.

Enter the beating heart of the Meucci factory, let yourself be carried away by the sounds of the machines that once worked without interrumption and let the emotions overwhelm you. MUMAT awaits for you, ready to reveal ancient secrets and enchant you with the majesty of a bygone time.Whether you are a history enthusiast, a curious traveler or an artistic soul, this one of a kind museum will fascinate and inspire you. Welcome to MUMAT, the temple of fabrics where dreams of the past come to life.
