Museums and cultural centers
A virtuous way to reuse industrial buildings and beyond is to transform them into cultural institutions of great value. This itinerary can start either from the town centre (Campolmi or Manifatture) with a northerly direction towards Fabbricone Theatre, or vice versa. By exploring these cultural institutions, you will discover the connection between Prato's industrial past and its current cultural vibrancy.
The Textile Museum is a notable example. It houses the largest national textile collection and is a treasure of historical memory. Since 2003, it is located in the former Cimatoria Campolmi, a 19th century industrial complex converted into a cultural space, which since 2009 has hosted the Lazzerini Cultural Centre with its Library. The Campolmi factory, active from 1863 to 1968, is the only large 19th century production complex still present within the walls. In the courtyard, the majestic chimney stands out, the tallest in Prato.
The Fabbricone Theatre is another example, born from the redevelopment of the large Fabbricone industrial complex. Founded in 1888, the Fabbricone was used as a theatre for the first time in 1974, paving the way for its transformation into an authentic stage structure. It also houses the Balli Wool Mill, an important textile company still in business.
Finally, a different regeneration project gave birth to Manifatture Digitali Cinema. This centre is based in the spaces of the ancient convent of Santa Caterina and was created through film production activity. Not only that, a tailoring workshop was born here, maintaining a strong link with the city's tradition.
