Abbey of S. Giusto A journey into the past within the walls of an ancient abbey immersed in the beauty of the Montalbano area

The Abbey of San Giusto al Pinone is one of the oldest churches in the Montalbano area, presumably built between the 11th and 12th centuries by Cluniac monks. Located in an enchanting natural context, surrounded by majestic holm oaks, turkey oaks and pines at the foot of the Pietramarina peak, the abbey represented a safe refuge along the impervious and risky paths of the past, as well as a fundamental point of reference for travelers of the time. Legend has it that the bell "la Sperduta" (the lost one) rang out at sunset to guide lost travelers during the winter.

The church's cross-committed plan has a single nave and a raised transept that ends in three apses. Below there is a crypt with cross vaults supported by elegant columns. On the facade, the white and green marble inserts above the mullioned portal bear witness to the suggestive Romanesque decorations. Although the church lost its sacred function and was transformed into a farmhouse in the eighteenth century, inside it still retains the original Romanesque structure. Unfortunately, no traces of the ancient monastery remain.

Currently, the abbey of San Giusto al Pinone cannot be visited as it requires major restoration works. However, its thousand-year history and its architectural majesty capture the imagination of visitors, offering an evocative experience that combines nature, spirituality and the charm of the past. This enchanting place represents a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the history and mystical atmosphere of an abbey with ancient origins, leaving an indelible mark in the hearts of those who discover it.
