Vaiano

Vaiano, a jewel set in the wonderful Bisenzio Valley, represents a destination full of history and traditions, where Roman and medieval antiquity is intertwined with the fervent textile activity of the nineteenth century. This municipality, inhabited by around 10,000 people, extends over an area of 34.24 km² and boasts numerous hamlets, each with a unique history and character: Fabio, Faltugnano, Gamberame, Grisciavola, La Briglia, La Cartaia, La Foresta, Tignamica, Popigliano, Schignano and Sofignano.

The origins of Vaiano date back to Roman times, but its original nucleus developed before the first millennium around the Abbey of San Salvatore. Thanks to the use of the waters of the Bisenzio river as a source of hydraulic energy, this place soon became a thriving centre, enriched by mills, fulling mills, paper mills and foundries since the Middle Ages. Starting from the second half of the nineteenth century, the city became famous as a renowned textile center, hosting various factories that contributed to its economic and cultural growth.

The Abbey of San Salvatore, in the heart of the historic centre, not only preserves a centuries-old history but also houses a museum dedicated to Agnolo Firenzuola, a Vallombrosan monk and humanist writer. This museum, part of the Houses of Memory circuit, offers a cultural journey into Vaiano's legacy.

The suggestive Villa del Mulinaccio also stands out in the landscape of Vaiano, known as Villa Vai, a witness to different eras and which belonged to illustrious owners, such as Filippo Sassetti, merchant, traveler and linguist. Today, this villa is the stage for public events and ceremonies, keeping its rich history intact.

Vaiano also boasts the prestigious Historical-Ethnographic Documentation Center of the Bisenzio Valley (CDSE), an institution dedicated to the research and study of local traditions. Housed in the municipal buildings, the CDSE preserves a vast historical photographic archive and a rich source of stories passed down orally, helping to keep the culture and memory of the region alive.

With its compelling history, its picturesque hamlets and dynamic cultural institutions, Vaiano presents itself as the ideal destination for those who wish to immerse themselves in the authentic essence of the Bisenzio Valley.

Poggio di Petto

Of Roman origins, Vaiano is the most important town of the Bisenzio Valley and owes its economic development to the use of the waters of the Bisenzio river as hydraulic energy.
