Exegi Monumentum Aere Perennius An Artistic Symbol of power and fragility in Prato that raises reflections on eternity and human transience

The broken column of Exegi Monumentum Aere Perennius has become one of the distinctive symbols of the city of Prato, alongside Moore's sculpture. This work, created by the spouses Anne and Patrick Poirier, was created on the occasion of the inauguration of the Pecci Centre in June 1988.

The column, made of stainless steel, has on its base the phrase "EXEGI MONUMENTUM AERE PERENNIUS", taken from Horace's Ars poetica (Odes, III, 30, 1). This wonderful quote, translated as "I have erected a monument more lasting than bronze", emphasizes the human will to power and the aspiration for eternity. However, it also represents the fragility and transitory destiny inherent in human nature and in the events connected to it.

"Exegi Monumentum Aere Perennius" is a work of art that invites those who observe it to reflect in an almost unconscious way, taking thoughts to an existential level that goes beyond our daily routine. This fascinating artistic creation arouses deep emotions and raises questions about our existence, the ephemerality of life and the search for a more lasting duration.
